History Made, Record Broken — Riteish Deshmukh’s Raja Shivaji Nears Rs 111 Crore as India’s Highest-Grossing Marathi Film

Five weeks in theatres and still standing. Raja Shivaji is in its final days on the big screen, but not before securing its place in the history books of Marathi cinema as the highest-grossing Marathi film ever released in India.

Raja Shivaji: 5th Weekend Box Office Performance

Raja Shivaji collected Rs 1.20 crore in its 5th weekend, registering a 65 per cent drop from the previous weekend. The film took its running total to Rs 109.45 crore gross at the Indian box office, including collections from both its Marathi and Hindi dubbed versions. TV Insider

The Riteish Deshmukh starrer is now running in its final legs and is expected to wind up its entire run somewhere between Rs 110 crore and Rs 112 crore gross — a solid figure that cements its historic status. TV Insider

A Record That Comes With Context

The achievement deserves a moment. Crossing Rs 110 crore gross in India as a Marathi film is genuinely rare — it is a testament to Riteish Deshmukh’s passion project finally finding the pan-India audience it was built for.

With this run, Raja Shivaji emerged as the highest-grossing Marathi film in India. That is the headline. But the fine print tells a more nuanced story.

The film will still remain behind Sairat and Baipan Bhari Deva in the core Marathi market, and that is where the heart of any Marathi film’s success truly lies. The expectations were even higher, given that Tanhaji and Chhaava — both rooted in similar Maharashtra-pride territory — did extraordinary numbers in the state, the former adjusting to around Rs 250 crore and the latter crossing Rs 300 crore. Raja Shivaji will not even reach Rs 100 crore in Maharashtra alone.

So while the all-India record is real and meaningful, the gap versus those historical giants reveals the ceiling that still exists for purely Marathi-medium storytelling at the mass market level.

The Bigger Picture for Marathi Cinema in 2026

Despite that caveat, 2026 is shaping up as the best year in recent memory for Maharashtra’s film industry.

With Raja Shivaji‘s promising run and Deool Band 2‘s gravity-defying performance, 2026 is proving to be an extra special year for Marathi cinema. One film has claimed the all-India record. The other is closing in on records within its home territory. Together, they signal a genuine creative and commercial resurgence that the industry has been working toward for years. TV Insider
