Rick and Morty Season 9 Overview

Episode 1 of season 9 begins with Morty realising Rick has been communicating with Evil Morty without his knowledge. Evil Morty explains to Rick that a group called The Collective wants to control the multiverse and views Rick as the biggest obstacle — a group that can command realities and expand to vast dimensions.

Rick, Morty, and Evil Morty venture through various realities trying to halt The Collective’s further advancement, which also involves a reintroduction to some previously used plot points — including the technology behind the portal guns and the residual destruction left by Rick Prime’s endeavours.

The show is created by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, with Scott Marder currently serving as showrunner for season 9.

What to Expect in Episode 2

In the preview for episode 2, Rick is seen entering a bowling alley called “Dream Lanes” on a snowy evening, with the patrons greeting him with excitement and appearing happy about his apparent return.

The bowling alley storyline looks less like a standard action episode and more like another psychological story centred on Rick’s personal struggles. The situation inside Dream Lanes will likely spiral into something much stranger before the episode ends.

Showrunner Scott Marder has hinted the season will continue balancing mythology-heavy stories with more standalone adventures, explaining: “It was a really great check-in with Evil Morty… we didn’t do it because we owed it; we did it because we had a great idea that serviced him and gave him a good reason to come back.”
