Rick and Morty’s penultimate Season 9 episode, “Salute Your Morts,” delivers exactly the kind of chaos fans expect — but underneath the space camp mayhem is a quiet turning point for two characters who’ve spent years coasting on Rick’s chaos to bail them out.

What Happens in the Episode

The episode opens with Morty and Summer facing expulsion from Harry Herpson High School after a string of reckless misuses of Rick’s tech. Beth, finally hitting her limit as a parent, pushes Rick to find a punishment that doesn’t just teach the kids that adults will always swoop in to fix things. Rick’s solution is to ship the siblings off to a space camp populated by wealthy, unsupervised teens — a setup meant to humble them.

Naturally, it backfires. The camp’s spoiled campers overthrow their counselors and take over entirely, leaving Morty and Summer trapped with no adult supervision and a ransom-hungry ringleader named Lintana calling the shots. Meanwhile, back home, Beth and Jerry accidentally get high on an alien “forever joint,” and when Rick eventually tries to rescue the kids, he ends up smoking the rest of the stash himself — leaving all three adults far too impaired to actually help.

That failure becomes the episode’s real point. With no one coming to save them, Morty and Summer are forced to rally the other trapped teens, fight back against their captors, and get themselves out. It’s a clear thematic reversal for a show built around Rick swooping in at the last second — this time, the kids have to be the ones who show up for themselves.

Why It Matters for the Finale

This episode sets up a clear shift heading into the Season 9 finale — Morty and Summer no longer assume Rick will fix everything, which could reshape how the family dynamic plays out as the season wraps up.
