Richa Ghosh: Siliguri’s Pride Shines Bright in Women’s World Cup Final 2025

The entire city of Siliguri erupted in celebration as their local hero, wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh, took the field in the historic Women’s World Cup 2025 final against South Africa at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium on November 2. From humble beginnings at a local cricket club to representing India on cricket’s biggest stage, the 22-year-old’s journey embodies determination, sacrifice, and unwavering family support.

Richa Ghosh: Overview

From Tennis Bat to World Cup Final

Richa’s cricket journey began at age four when she accompanied her father, Manabendra Ghosh—a club-level player and umpire—to matches at Bagha Jatin Athletic Club in Siliguri. With no girls’ team available in her hometown, young Richa fearlessly honed her skills playing alongside boys, never backing down from facing fast bowlers.

Her father, recognizing her extraordinary talent, made the ultimate sacrifice by giving up his business in 2016 to dedicate himself entirely to nurturing Richa’s cricket career. Despite financial hardships and frequent trips from Siliguri to Kolkata for training camps, Manabendra ensured his daughter received quality coaching and opportunities.

The determination paid off spectacularly. At just 11 years old, Richa was selected for Bengal’s Under-19 team, and by 12, she earned a place in the senior Bengal squad—a testament to her prodigious talent. She was named Bengal Cricketer of the Year in 2018, signaling the arrival of something special.

Siliguri Celebrates Its Daughter

As India battled South Africa in the World Cup final, Richa’s coach Pappy Dalal from Siliguri expressed confidence in his protégé, saying she might hit a century and that India would win the World Cup, praising her as a good batter and keeper. The pride in his voice echoed the sentiments of an entire city watching one of their own compete on cricket’s grandest stage.

At 22, Richa already owns records for India’s fastest ODI fifty and joint fastest T20I fifty, showcasing her explosive power-hitting abilities. Her journey from a teenager who simply saw the ball and hit the ball to a mature finisher who reads situations and delivers under pressure reflects incredible growth.

World Cup Role: India’s Middle-Order Firepower

In the World Cup 2025, Richa has struck ten sixes—joint-highest in the tournament alongside South Africa’s Nadine de Klerk. Her ability to accelerate innings in crucial moments makes her invaluable to India’s batting depth.

In India’s historic semifinal victory over defending champions Australia, Richa contributed with two fours and two sixes, helping seal the record run-chase of 339 that propelled India into their third World Cup final.

The MS Dhoni Connection

Richa’s wicketkeeping style and finishing abilities draw inevitable comparisons to her idol, MS Dhoni. Her lightning run-out of Sophie Ecclestone in WPL 2025 showcased reflexes reminiscent of Dhoni’s, while her explosive 64 off 27 balls for Royal Challengers Bangalore demonstrated calculated destruction under pressure.

Working with coaches like Amol Muzumdar, Richa has transformed from an aggressive teenager into a composed finisher who understands match situations. Her Test cricket debut in December 2023, where she scored 52 in her first innings, proved her versatility across all formats.

A Family’s Dream Realized

When Richa made the Indian squad, her father Manabendra said his dream was fulfilled, stating it was his dream to see her in the India team. The entire Ghosh family—mother Swapna and sister Somashree—traveled from Siliguri to witness her Test debut at Wankhede Stadium, making it an emotional milestone.

Today, as Richa stands on the cusp of World Cup glory, she represents not just Siliguri but every small-town dreamer who dares to imagine the impossible. Her journey reminds us that with passion, sacrifice, and unwavering family support, geographical boundaries cannot limit ambition.
