The countdown has begun. After 23 glorious years of dominating world football, Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will “definitely” be his last tournament for Portugal. The 40-year-old icon, still chasing an elusive goal milestone, finally provided clarity on football’s biggest retirement question.

Cristiano Ronaldo Retirement: The Moment Everything Changes

For months, Cristiano Ronaldo teased retirement with vague comments about hanging up his boots “soon.” But when asked by CNN if the 2026 World Cup would be his final outing, Ronaldo left little room for doubt, confirming “Definitely, yes. I will be 41 years old, and I think [this] will be the moment in the big competition.”

This isn’t just another farewell—it’s the punctuation mark on football’s greatest individual career. The Portuguese legend will be 41 when he potentially plays his last international match, cementing his legacy as sport’s most relentless competitor.

More Than Just Retirement: Chasing 1,000 Goals

Here’s the twist: Ronaldo isn’t simply riding off into the sunset. The 40-year-old has vowed not to retire until he scores his 1,000th career goal, currently sitting at 956 goals for club and country. That magical number drives everything—his motivation, his intensity, his refusal to accept that age is just a number.

After being named the Best Middle East Player at the Globe Soccer Awards, Ronaldo declared: “My passion is high and I want to continue. It doesn’t matter where I play, whether in the Middle East or Europe.”

What Life After Football Looks Like

The emotional weight of retirement isn’t lost on Cristiano Ronaldo. In an interview with Piers Morgan, he acknowledged: “It will be very, very difficult but I’ve prepared my future since (I was) 25, 26, 27 years old.”

Interestingly, football won’t be his future. Rather than coaching, Ronaldo plans to focus on family, hobbies like UFC and padel, and learning more about his business companies—a stark contrast to the 24/7 football existence he’s maintained for decades.
