Real Madrid fail to win 2024 opener against Mallorca with Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe’s much-anticipated La Liga debut for Real Madrid ended on a bittersweet note as the Spanish and European champions were held to a 1-1 draw by a determined Real Mallorca in their opening match of the 2024 season. The clash at Son Moix Stadium showcased both the prowess and the challenges faced by Madrid’s star-studded lineup.

Kylian Mbappe’s La Liga Debut: Real Madrid Held to a Draw by Resilient Real Mallorca

Despite Mbappe’s relentless efforts to make an impact, Real Mallorca’s goalkeeper, Dominik Greif, proved to be a formidable barrier, denying him a goal. Real Madrid initially took the lead with a stunning strike from Rodrygo Goes, who capitalized on Vinicius Junior’s assist to fire the ball into the far corner. However, the hosts responded in the second half when Vedat Muriqi delivered a powerful header, levelling the score.

Real Madrid, known for their offensive strength, found Mallorca’s defense particularly challenging to penetrate. As the match progressed, Mallorca nearly clinched a victory, demonstrating their resilience against the reigning champions. The game took a downturn for Los Blancos when defender Ferland Mendy received a red card in stoppage time for a high challenge on Muriqi, adding to the frustrations of the visitors.

Carlo Ancelotti, Madrid’s coach, fielded the same starting eleven that had recently triumphed over Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup. Jude Bellingham played a pivotal role in midfield, positioned behind the attacking trio of Mbappe, Vinicius, and Rodrygo. Despite this formidable lineup, Madrid struggled to extend their lead after their early goal.

Mallorca’s new coach, Jagoba Arrasate, faced an uphill battle in his first match against the title defenders, especially with the addition of Mbappe to Madrid’s roster. Yet, his team displayed remarkable discipline and focus, especially when Muriqi almost added to their tally before halftime.

The second half saw Muriqi’s equalizer from Dani Rodriguez’s corner, reigniting the hosts’ hopes. Mbappe continued to seek opportunities, testing Greif with a low shot, while Vinicius missed a chance to regain the lead for Madrid. In a bid to alter the dynamics, Ancelotti introduced veteran Luka Modric, replacing Aurelien Tchouameni to increase attacking momentum. However, Mbappe’s subsequent attempts were thwarted by Greif, with Johan Mojica clearing a crucial rebound.

As the match concluded, the draw highlighted the competitive nature of La Liga’s 2024 opening weekend. Despite the setback, Real Madrid remains a formidable force, with Kylian Mbappe poised to make significant contributions in the season ahead. The team will look to build on their strengths and address the challenges they faced against a resolute Mallorca side.
