Ray Gunn Trailer Is Here: Brad Bird’s Retro-Futuristic Noir Gets a Rare 70mm Release Before Netflix

Some films take years. Ray Gunn took more than thirty. Brad Bird has been chasing this retro-futuristic detective story for decades, and Netflix has finally shown us why. The first trailer is out, and animation fans get a rare theatrical treat.

Ray Gunn Release Snapshot

What the Trailer Shows?

The teaser runs just under two and a half minutes, set to a special cut of “6 Underground” by Sneaker Pimps. It sells a world where 1939 style meets the distant future: small-time private eye Ray Gunn, played by Sam Rockwell, gets tangled up with pop star Venus Nova, voiced by Scarlett Johansson, who is allegedly violent and emotional.

The dialogue is pure Chandler-style noir, and the action looks anything but quiet, with hover-bike chases, blasters and an alien sidekick keeping Ray on his toes.

Why 70mm Matters?

A 70mm run is very unusual for an animated film, which suggests real confidence in the visuals. Tickets should go fast: the London Film Festival screenings on October 10 and 17 have already sold out. There’s also awards buzz, since “Too Much To Ask,” performed by Johansson, is reportedly headed for Oscar consideration in the original song category.

Ray Gunn: The Voice Cast

The core cast includes Rockwell, Johansson, Tom Waits, Matt Berry and Bird himself as two alien henchmen. Newly announced names include Alan Tudyk, Bobby Cannavale, Michelle Rodriguez, Aasif Mandvi, Kathryn Hunter, John Ratzenberger and Patton Oswalt as a hologram.
