Punjab Kings – IPL 2025 Auction : In a bold move ahead of the IPL 2025 Auction, Punjab Kings have announced the departure of their Director of Cricket, Sanjay Bangar, as part of a sweeping overhaul of the team’s management. The decision comes on the heels of a series of underwhelming seasons, with the franchise looking to hit the reset button in pursuit of long awaited success.

Let’s have a look into more details: Punjab Kings – IPL 2025 Auction

Major Overhaul: Sanjay Bangar and Trevor Bayliss Exit

Sanjay Bangar, who returned to Punjab Kings as Director of Cricket in December 2023, has been let go after just one season. This was his second stint with the team, having previously coached them to the IPL final in 2014. However, his recent tenure has been cut short as the franchise looks to make a fresh start. Alongside Bangar, head coach Trevor Bayliss has also been relieved of his duties after two disappointing seasons where the Kings finished eighth and ninth in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

Ricky Ponting Takes Charge

The biggest headline in Punjab Kings’ reset is the appointment of former Australian captain Ricky Ponting as the new head coach. Ponting has signed a four year contract (2025-2028), signaling the franchise’s intent to rebuild and aim for consistency. Known for his aggressive leadership and tactical sharpness, Ponting’s arrival has already created buzz among fans.

In an interview, Ponting shared his vision for the team: “We won’t accept mediocrity. Punjab Kings will be a different place, and people will talk about this team in a new light.” His appointment is seen as a transformative move aimed at shifting the narrative for a franchise that has struggled to secure a coveted IPL title.

Punjab Kings Struggles for Stability

Punjab Kings journey over the last decade has been marked by instability, especially in their coaching ranks. Since 2014, the team has gone through a revolving door of coaches, including Virender Sehwag, Mike Hesson, Anil Kumble, and now Trevor Bayliss. Despite these changes, the franchise has yet to lift the IPL trophy, a frustration that has plagued them for years.

Focus Shifts to IPL 2025 Auction

With the IPL 2025 Auction fast approaching, Punjab Kings are now preparing to build a new core under Ponting’s leadership. The removal of Bangar and Bayliss is part of a larger strategy to ensure the team is more dynamic and results driven. Ponting’s sharp cricketing acumen is expected to play a pivotal role in reshaping both the on field performances and the team culture.

Who Will Lead Punjab Kings in 2025?

As Punjab Kings restructure their coaching staff, there’s also speculation about the captaincy. With Shikhar Dhawan having retired from all forms of cricket, the franchise will likely name a new captain for the 2025 season. English all rounder Sam Curran served as a stand in skipper during the 2024 season, but the Kings may lean towards an Indian leader. Jitesh Sharma, who was vice captain in 2024, is one of the top contenders for the role.

The upcoming IPL 2025 season will be pivotal for Punjab Kings as they look to finally break their title drought. Under the stewardship of Ricky Ponting and with a full reset in motion, the franchise is hoping to turn the tide and bring home their first IPL trophy.
