Sony and Microsoft both decided to provide gamers with Netflix-like memberships. On your PlayStation or Xbox console, you may play thousands of games for a monthly charge. In reality, you can choose games from a PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass catalog that is so large it will take you months or even years to fully explore.

Both PlayStation Plus and Game Pass have advantages and disadvantages. Sony launched its first subscription service in 2015 under the name Sony Now. Users of this stand-alone membership were able to stream hundreds of Sony movies, both classic and contemporary. Sony, however, decided to revamp its subscription service and divide it into three tiers in June 2022. The three tiers of the new membership service, known as PlayStation Plus, are Essential, Extra, and Premium.

One PS5 game and two PS4 titles are included in the Essential PS Plus package each month. However, you have access to cloud storage and multiplayer online. You’ll receive special discounts on all Sony PlayStation console games with it.

With the PS Plus Extra subscription, you get access to a library of more than 400 downloadable PS5 and PS4 games. You can play some of the most well-known Ubisoft games for no additional charge with this package because Ubisoft+ Classic titles are included.

The PS Plus Premium package combines the Essential and Extra tiers with additional features. You will be able to download and stream PS5 and PS4 titles, but not PS3 games. Over 340 new games are added to the already large library of more than 400 games, expanding the selection to include PS1, PS2, and PSP games. Titles from Ubisoft+ Classic are also included.

PS Plus and Game Pass – what are the Pros and Cons

You’ll need an internet connection to stream games utilizing the PS Plus Premium subscription. For a seamless stream, Sony advises at least 5 Mbps. If you don’t want to deal with downloading the game, only use the streaming service. The main drawback is that you may occasionally experience lag and abrupt fps dips.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S users can purchase Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass. But if you have Windows 10 or 11, you can also get Game Pass for PC. Game Pass titles were previously only available for download. However, Microsoft decided to make a streaming service available to their users, so you no longer need to load up your disk with games. However, you’ll need Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate if you want to play online games.

Xbox Game Pass is a rather simple subscription with no levels, unlike PS Plus. You will have immediate access to every Xbox game from every generation, and you can download and play as many as you like. That is, assuming your Xbox console has enough capacity.

You must log into Xbox Live at least once every 30 days to maintain your Xbox Game Pass subscription. Xbox Game Pass will lose some titles while adding others. Unfortunately, you can’t anticipate which titles will be available in the Xbox library. However, you receive a discount as a subscriber when you buy any game from the library or any game’s DLC.

The goal of PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass is to provide consumers with access to a library of material akin to Netflix. According to the plan you select, the material in this instance consists of games that you can either download or watch. Both systems have enormous video game collections, but they maintain their collections and add new games in various ways.

Microsoft adds the newest titles to its Xbox Game Pass on the day of release, unlike Sony, which waits a few months to add them to its PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers. If you enjoy playing the newest games as soon as they are published, this is a major thing. On the other hand, if you favor independent gaming, you’ll be pleased to learn that Sony automatically includes these games in all of its PS Plus subscription plans.

For the time being, PlayStation Plus is behind Xbox Game Pass, although the latter is catching up and providing some pleasant perks to subscribers as well. Xbox Game Pass benefits greatly from receiving premium game titles and releasing them on the same day.

Sony and Microsoft both provide subscription plans for PC gaming, but Xbox also offers these subscriptions for smartphones, allowing customers to play some of their games without even needing a controller.
