What Is Varanasi About?

Varanasi is Rajamouli’s first project since his Oscar-winning RRR, and the scale matches the ambition. It’s an epic time-travel action adventure that follows a devoted seeker on a dangerous journey across centuries to recover a lost cosmic artifact of immense power — only to realize the force guiding him has ambitions of its own.

Mahesh Babu leads the film as Rudra, and has confirmed he’ll also portray Lord Rama in one of the film’s episodes. Prithviraj Sukumaran plays the antagonist, Kumbha, while Priyanka steps into the role of Mandakini, a character shrouded in mystery so far, with more casting details expected to roll out gradually.

This kind of layered, mythology-inspired storytelling has deep roots in Indian epics, particularly the Ramayana, which continues to shape modern cinematic universes across the country, as detailed on Wikipedia.

Priyanka’s Busy Schedule

Varanasi isn’t the only big project keeping Priyanka occupied. She’s also gearing up for Reset, a survival thriller directed by Matt Smukler and written by Jordan Rawlins, which also stars Orlando Bloom — giving her a solid mix of international and homegrown blockbusters on her plate.

With a nearly year-long wait still ahead before Varanasi hits theatres, expect the makers to keep dropping first looks and updates to keep the anticipation building.
