For centuries, the world has been captivated by the tragic tale of Pompeii, the ancient Roman city instantly frozen in ash by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. Now, audiences are invited to witness this historical event through a completely fresh lens. National Geographic is gearing up to release a groundbreaking new docuseries, Pompeii Out Of Time, hosted by none other than acclaimed British actor Tom Hiddleston. This upcoming series promises to reshape our understanding of the disaster, moving beyond the familiar ash-encased ruins to uncover gripping, minute-by-minute accounts of human survival.

A “Time Detective” Exploring Mount Vesuvius

In Pompeii Out Of Time, Tom Hiddleston steps out of his usual blockbuster roles to become a self-professed “time detective.” While many historical documentaries focus on the sheer scale of the geological catastrophe, this new National Geographic project pivots toward the human element. The series will track the harrowing decisions made by the residents of Pompeii hour by hour during the mounting chaos and pressure of the eruption.

What truly sets this documentary apart is its focus on an often-overlooked fact: not everyone in Pompeii perished. The revelation that some people actually survived the infamous disaster was a major drawing point for Tom Hiddleston. By digging through the metaphorical and literal ash of the past, the docuseries aims to explore profound connections between ancient history and our modern world. As Hiddleston notes in the recently released teaser, humans have always told stories about the past to better understand their present.

Tom Hiddleston: From the Multiverse to Historical History

Fans are used to seeing Tom Hiddleston navigate timelines as the God of Mischief, Loki. However, Pompeii Out Of Time allows the actor to showcase his deep passion for history and storytelling in a grounded, real-world setting. Hiddleston does not just serve as the charismatic narrator and on-screen host; he is deeply involved behind the scenes as an executive producer. He has partnered with Kevin R. Wright—with whom he previously collaborated on major television projects—to bring this ambitious historical recounting to life.

This project continues a highly successful trend of Disney and National Geographic pairing recognizable, A-list actors with premium educational content. Hiddleston follows in the footsteps of his peers, such as Chris Hemsworth and Benedict Cumberbatch, who have also spearheaded massive, globe-trotting factual series for the network.
