WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps, used for personal and professional communication. This has made for a versatile device, one that we now use in personal settings and business; a must-have tool for most. This popularity attracts cybercriminals to exploit users through various means. Recently in India, another scam emerged where hackers are sending Wedding Invitations to spread Malware through WhatsApp.

Police Warn of Hackers Sending WhatsApp Wedding Invitations to Steal Data

Now, the Himachal Pradesh Police have warned of a wedding invitation scam where hackers send dedicated APK files. WhatsApp has been used as the commonest and most convenient tool to send wedding invitations in digital form but now hackers have started abusing it. As per the scam, you will receive an ordinary wedding invitation that includes the attachment. When a user downloads this attachment it installs a malicious app on their phone. With this app, hackers would remotely have access to the phone and personal data as well as photos among other things.

Once hackers had been able to break into the invention, they might steal information and demand cash from targets – or get involved in other crimes. The invites often arrive from unrecognized numbers, which is one of the biggest warning signs. Saying that users should confirm if numbers are from strangers before opening an attachment to prevent falling victim to this scam. You should also avoid downloading the APK since it is popular to distribute malware through this format.

Wedding invitations sound innocuous and are usually delivered in a large file, but always check the source when downloading. If they do fall victim to the scam, authorities say they should report it immediately. This can be done through a national online portal or by ringing the national helpline at 1930. By exercising caution and following these precautions WhatsApp users can save themselves from becoming victims of a scam like this one.
