Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train in mid-January 2026 on the Guwahati-Howrah route, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced. The launch is expected around January 17-18 after successful completion of testing and certification.

The fares have been designed keeping the middle class in mind, according to Vaishnaw, who noted ticket prices are substantially lower than air travel. Guwahati-Kolkata air fares range from ₹6,000 to ₹8,000, making the sleeper train nearly 60% cheaper than flying.

This pricing strategy positions the Vande Bharat Sleeper as an attractive option for overnight journeys between northeastern states and West Bengal, offering speed and comfort at reasonable rates.

Advanced Features & Technology

The train completed its final high-speed trial on December 31, 2025, on the Kota-Nagda section, reaching its design speed of 180 kmph. Vaishnaw posted a viral video demonstrating the train’s smoothness—a glass of water placed atop three stacked glasses showed no spillage at 180 kmph.

Modern Amenities Include:

  • Ergonomically designed berths with comfortable ladders
  • Automatic plug doors and fully sealed gangways
  • CCTV surveillance in every coach
  • Bio-vacuum toilets with modern facilities
  • Advanced suspension systems for smooth rides

  • Special lavatories for Divyangjan passengers

Expansion Plans

Two train sets are currently ready, with eight more Vande Bharat Sleeper trains expected to be added by the end of 2026, bringing the total to 12. Indian Railways aims to induct over 200 such trains in the coming years, marking a major transformation in overnight rail travel.

The Railway Minister stated that 2026 would be the year of railway reforms, with focus on passenger-centric initiatives and export potential for Indian railway technology.

Commissioner of Railway Safety Approval

The train received approval from the Commissioner of Railway Safety after comprehensive testing, clearing the final regulatory hurdle for passenger operations. This certification confirms the train meets all safety standards for high-speed overnight travel.
