From Flop to Phenomenon: “Hanuman Ansh” Pulls Off a Box Office Miracle Nobody Saw Coming

Two weeks of silence. One Sunday that changed everything. Just when trade analysts had written it off, the devotional drama “Hanuman Ansh” staged a jaw-dropping comeback in its third weekend — proving that in Indian cinema, faith-based films can defy every prediction.

Hanuman Ansh: From Disaster to Turnaround

The film, based on the life of Neem Karoli Baba, had a painfully slow start. It opened on around 200 screens and collected a modest Rs 85 lakh in its first week. Things looked even bleaker in week two, when screen count dropped to just 40 — yet somehow, the film still managed Rs 45 lakh, roughly half its first-week total on five times fewer screens, hinting at quietly building word-of-mouth.

Then came the twist. Exhibitors, sensing momentum, expanded the film back to around 400 screens in week three — double its opening count. The result was a stunning Rs 3.40 crore weekend, a number nobody expected from a film that had grossed just Rs 1.30 crore in its first 14 days combined.

The Sunday That Changed Everything

The real showstopper was the third Sunday, when the film exploded to Rs 2.40 crore in a single day — more than double its entire first-week earnings. That kind of single-day jump is almost unheard of for a film limping through its second week just days earlier.

Why This Pattern Isn’t Entirely New

This isn’t the first time a devotional film has pulled off a delayed surge. A similar story played out with “Laalo: Krishna Sada Sahaayate” last year, which stayed under the radar for a month before becoming an unexpected box office sensation. Devotional cinema, it seems, often thrives on slow-building faith-driven word-of-mouth rather than opening-weekend hype.

If “Hanuman Ansh” sustains this momentum, it could still emerge as a surprise hit — a rare feat for a film that seemed all but finished after its first fortnight.
