Pete Lau was VP of OPPO and he departed from the company to form another smartphone firm, OnePlus backed by BBK Electronics who owns Oppo, Vivo and Realme. As a founder and Chief executive officer of OnePlus, Pete Lau made the company into probably the most famous smartphone brands at a short span of time.

Now, there are rumours surrounding his return to OPPO but Pete Lau will retain his existing role as OnePlus too. While continuing to the Chief Executive Officer of OnePlus, Pete Lau will join OPPO as the main product Expertise Officer. In this new role in OPPO, Pete Lau has been said to be accountable for merchandise planning as well as development.

OnePlus will be launching cheaper smartphones in India first

The news comes only months after it was declared that VP of OPPO, Shen Yiren announced his departure from the business, who was accountable for marketing. It’ll be intriguing to see how Pete Lau reshuffles and takes over the business, if it’s true, given that both OnePlus and OPPO have a different kind of approach. While OnePlus is focused on online retail, OPPO gaining its prominence throughout offline earnings.

Another thing to note apart from marketing is that OPPO has a different kind of product line, varying from entry-level to premium flagships. While OnePlus who had been making “so-called” flagship killer smartphones is now making only flagship smartphones with the new OnePlus 8 series.

The leadership change also comes as the performance of OPPO is falling although the brand is still among the leading smartphones firms globally. In Q1 2020, for instance, OPPO’s market share dipped by 1% when compared to the previous quarter, it declined by 3% compared to the identical period last year.

OPPO is the 5th largest smartphone brand globally with a market share of 8%. In Q1 2020 alone, the company was able to ship 22.3 million units of its mobile phones, and this is quite lower compared to 31.4 million units in Q4 2019, obviously the COVID-19 pandemic is one of the major reasons for such downfall.
