From Old Trafford to the Octagon: Patrice Evra Teases Suarez While Announcing MMA Debut

In a move that has left fans stunned and amused in equal measure, former Manchester United icon Patrice Evra has revealed his latest career twist — a transition into the world of mixed martial arts.

The 43-year-old Frenchman is set to debut in the Professional Fighters League (PFL) next month in Paris, marking a dramatic departure from the football pitch to the fighting cage. Known for his playful persona, Evra couldn’t resist aiming a cheeky jab at old rival Luis Suarez while announcing his new sporting chapter.

Evra’s Parisian Fight Night Set for May 23

The much-anticipated bout will take place on Friday, May 23, at the Accor Arena in Paris, just five days after Evra celebrates his 44th birthday. He will appear on the PFL Europe 2 card as an amateur fighter, facing an opponent yet to be confirmed.

Though the identity of his challenger remains a mystery, Evra jokingly suggested a high-profile adversary — former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez — as his dream opponent.

Call-Out With a Bite: Suarez Jab Sparks Buzz

Never one to shy away from theatrical flair, Evra lit up social media with his trademark humor while announcing the surprising news. “BREAKING: I’m officially training for my first fight with @PFLEurope,” he posted on X. “They will pick my opponent…They asked who I wanna face. I said: Luis Suárez. I’ll pay out of pocket. He can even bite me.”

The mention of Suarez revives memories of their infamous on-pitch rivalry, particularly the 2011 incident involving allegations of racial abuse, followed by a controversial handshake refusal months later. Evra’s playful dig adds a layer of levity to what is already a surreal development.

Years in the Making: A Combat Dream Realized

Although this MMA switch seems outlandish at first glance, Evra has reportedly been sharpening his combat skills for nearly a decade, often training with elite-level athletes. He shares a close relationship with PFL welterweight Cedric Doumbe, a respected figure in the sport. Their camaraderie has further fueled Evra’s curiosity and confidence in stepping into the cage. “I’ve performed on the world’s biggest stages, won every major trophy in football, but PFL Europe Paris will be an incredibly special night for me,” said Evra.

“I’ve been training alongside the best in the world for years and they’ll also tell you I’m ready for this. I’m going to put on a show at the Accor Arena on May 23, so come watch the spectacle.”

Legacy Beyond Football: A Champion’s Mentality

Evra’s decorated football résumé speaks volumes. With over 700 career appearances, including 379 matches for Manchester United, his trophy cabinet includes five Premier League titles, a Champions League medal, and silverware from stints with Juventus, Monaco, and other clubs. He donned the French national jersey 81 times, featuring in multiple major international tournaments.

Following his retirement in 2019, Evra dipped into punditry, pursued coaching qualifications, and made headlines for his exuberant social media persona. His signature phrase, “I love this game,” became symbolic of his joyful approach to both sport and life — even lending its name to his autobiography published in 2021.
