Other Mommy Ending Explained: The Demon That Wanted Bela’s Heart

Some horror films end with a scream. Other Mommy ends with a choice. If you left the theatre unsure what the entity wanted or what that final scene meant, here’s a clear breakdown.

Other Mommy: Recap

What Is “Other Mommy”?

Eight-year-old Bela is struggling at a new school while her parents, Ursula and Russell, drift apart. Then a presence that looks like her mother begins appearing. Bela calls it “Other Mommy,” and it keeps asking to enter her heart.

The family learns it is a trickster demon that can shapeshift and manipulate its surroundings. It feeds on the household’s tension, even turning those cracks against them. Crucially, it can take Bela only if she agrees, and that single rule drives the ending.

The Basement Confession

After weapons and help from paranormal investigators fail, the family barricades itself in the basement. There, Ursula makes two painful confessions: she originally never wanted a child because she feared losing her freedom, and Russell is not Bela’s biological father.

The truths seem to weaken the demon, but they also devastate Bela. Hurt and overwhelmed, she runs to her bedroom and, in a moment of weakness, begs the entity to come in.

Bela’s Choice

Other Mommy appears and offers what a hurting child most wants: a life where she will never feel pain again. The temptation is real. But Bela remembers a lesson from her grandmother, Ruth, that pain is an unavoidable part of being alive.

She realises that escaping pain would cost her humanity. So she says no, repeatedly denying the demon permission until its hold finally breaks and it is defeated. In a way, the monster loses because Bela chooses to feel everything, even the hurt.

The Final Scene

Months later, Bela, Ursula and Russell are happily hanging Christmas lights. It looks like healing. But Bela notices signs that Ursula’s unhappiness is creeping back. The film leaves open whether the family has truly overcome its problems or whether the real danger is the quiet distance between them.

What It All Means?

At its core, Other Mommy is a story about grief, honesty and the temptation to numb ourselves. Jessica Chastain plays a mother whose unspoken regrets become the demon’s doorway, which makes the horror feel surprisingly human.
