The iOS ecosystem’s launch represents a significant step forward for Opera. This new browser will be made available in the coming months as the DMA goes into effect in March 2024.

Opera was pleased to learn that Apple was planning to release an iOS browser selection screen that would enable users to more easily designate their favorite browser as the default. The Apple interoperability request form, which Arnesen is expected to release soon, provides information on how developers can make requests for iPhone and iOS capabilities compatibility.

Opera hopes that Apple will implement these changes globally, even though the new browser will initially be available in Europe. Opera disclosed that it intends to make a “major investment” in a big artificial intelligence infrastructure project in Europe, but it did not provide any details on the AI-powered browser.

Third-party browsers used to need the WebKit engine, which powered Apple’s Safari browser. Apple will now accept submissions of non-WebKit-based browsers that comply with the DMA for web browser apps and in-app browsers that display web pages within iOS apps.

Opera sees this as an opportunity to provide iPhone users with an AI-powered alternative to Safari. Jørgen Arnesen, EVP of Opera for Mobile, said the company is pleased with the DMA-caused changes and plans to increase the number of browsers on iOS to encourage competition.
