Talking to AI is about to feel a lot less robotic. OpenAI has launched GPT-Live, a new generation of voice models built for natural human-AI interaction, now powering ChatGPT Voice. The upgrade tackles one of AI’s most persistent problems: awkward, stilted conversations.
Why Old Voice AI Felt Off
Earlier cascaded voice systems chained together a speech-to-text model, a language model, and a text-to-speech model — a setup that enabled talking to AI for the first time, but often lost information between models and produced slow, stilted responses Later turn-based models like Advanced Voice Mode reduced latency by processing audio within a single model, but still waited for silence to detect when a user finished speaking, often misreading pauses or background noise as the end of a turn and interrupting at odd moments.

What’s Actually New
GPT-Live is built on a full-duplex architecture, meaning it can listen and speak at the same time, continuously processing input while generating output and making interaction decisions — like when to speak, pause, or interrupt — many times per second. It’s a shift similar in spirit to how full-duplex communication works in traditional telecom systems, applied here to conversational AI.
The model also delegates deeper reasoning, web search, or complex tasks to OpenAI’s latest frontier model behind the scenes, bringing results back into the conversation once ready — all while keeping the conversation flowing in the meantime. At launch, GPT-Live uses GPT-5.5 in the background.

Smarter, More Natural Answers
Users can now choose reasoning levels — Instant for fast responses, or Medium and High when they want ChatGPT to think longer — and the assistant can show rich visual cards for topics like weather, stocks, and sports while talking. In head-to-head evaluations, both GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini were strongly preferred over Advanced Voice Mode for conversational flow, turn-taking, and how natural interactions felt.
Safety Built Into Every Conversation
OpenAI expanded safety testing with new audio-native evaluations covering self-harm, psychosis, emotional reliance on AI, violence, and sexual content, and built safeguards that can steer responses, surface support resources, or end conversations in higher-risk cases.Additional protections were designed for teen users, with parental controls allowing parents to manage voice access and receive notifications in higher-risk situations.
GPT-Live is rolling out globally starting today, though it doesn’t yet support voice with video or screen sharing — a feature OpenAI says is coming soon.
