OpenAI is making a surprising hardware debut. The company’s first consumer device—codenamed “Project Gumdrop”—takes the form of a pen-shaped gadget designed by Apple’s legendary Jony Ive. Expected to launch between 2026-2027, this AI pen aims to become your third essential device alongside smartphones and laptops.

OpenAI’s AI Pen Device: What We Know

The pen-sized gadget, comparable to an iPod Shuffle, will feature a microphone and camera for capturing the world around you. Users can transfer handwritten notes directly to ChatGPT, blending analog creativity with AI-powered digital processing. Think of it as a bridge between physical writing and cloud-based intelligence.

OpenAI initially planned manufacturing with China’s Luxshare but pivoted to Foxconn for production in Vietnam or the United States. This strategic shift addresses supply chain concerns while keeping Foxconn as OpenAI’s primary manufacturing partner for everything from AI data centers to consumer devices.

Feature	Details
Codename	Project Gumdrop
Form Factor	Pen-shaped, iPod Shuffle size
Key Hardware	Microphone, camera
Main Function	Handwriting-to-ChatGPT transfer
Manufacturer	Foxconn (Vietnam/US)
Launch Window	2026-2027
Designer	Jony Ive (ex-Apple CDO)

The Third Device Strategy

OpenAI’s ambition extends beyond replacing traditional tools. The company hopes to supplant the iPhone as the primary tech medium by leveraging AI-based productivity through multiple device categories. Beyond the pen, OpenAI is developing a portable audio gadget focused on voice interactions—betting that audio will eventually replace screens as our primary AI interface.

Past attempts at “third devices” haven’t fared well. Remember the Humane AI Pin or Rabbit R1? Both struggled to find their audience. OpenAI faces similar challenges convincing consumers they need another gadget, though Jony Ive’s design pedigree and ChatGPT integration could make the difference.

The project has encountered technical hurdles including software bugs, privacy concerns, and infrastructure gaps. Whether OpenAI can overcome these challenges and deliver a compelling product remains uncertain.
