OnePlus Faces Backlash Over Misleading eSIM Support on OnePlus 12

OnePlus, a brand that has long been celebrated for its innovative technology and customer-centric approach, finds itself in hot water yet again. Following the controversy surrounding the UFS storage specifications of the OnePlus 12R, the tech giant is facing fresh criticism from its loyal user base, this time over the absence of eSIM support in the OnePlus 12 – despite earlier confirmations of the feature.

OnePlus was criticized by users for eSIM Support on OnePlus 12

The Promise and the Letdown

At the heart of the issue is OnePlus’s initial promise of eSIM support for the OnePlus 12, a feature that influenced many consumers’ decisions to purchase the device. The excitement was short-lived, however, as users soon discovered that the much-anticipated eSIM functionality was nowhere to be found. Adding insult to injury, OnePlus quietly revised the specifications on its official Indian website, removing any mention of eSIM support for the OnePlus 12.

This move has not only raised concerns about OnePlus’s commitment to transparency but also about its adherence to fair consumer practices. A Reddit post by a dismayed OnePlus user highlights the frustration felt by many:

“After the OnePlus 12R UFS saga in India, OnePlus is at it again with gross misrepresentation & false marketing with OnePlus 12…At the time of launch, OnePlus 12 was advertised to have e-sim feature, influencing several purchases, only for consumers to realize later that eSIM support is absent…”

A Market Left Wanting

The absence of eSIM support is particularly glaring in the Indian market, where OnePlus enjoys significant brand recognition and sales. This oversight is all the more perplexing given that major Indian network carriers such as Jio, Airtel, and Vi offer eSIM support, with Airtel having introduced the technology back in 2019. OnePlus’s decision to withhold eSIM functionality from the Indian variant of the OnePlus 12, while including it in North American and European models, has left many questioning the brand’s priorities.

The Bigger Picture

The eSIM debacle is not an isolated incident but part of a worrying trend of tech companies failing to deliver on their promises. In an age where digital transparency and consumer rights are increasingly under the spotlight, such practices can severely damage a brand’s reputation and consumer trust. For a company like OnePlus, known for its passionate and engaged user community, the backlash could have long-lasting implications.

Moving Forward

As the outcry grows, it remains to be seen how OnePlus will address the concerns of its users. The company’s response (or lack thereof) will be a crucial test of its commitment to its customers and its ability to uphold the values it claims to stand by. For the sake of its loyal fans and the future of the brand, one hopes that OnePlus takes this opportunity to reflect on its practices and recommit to transparency and fairness.

In the meantime, the tech community waits and watches, hoping that this incident will spark a broader conversation about accountability and consumer rights in the fast-paced world of technology.
