Marvel fans have waited years for a straight answer on whether the Mad Titan returns. Josh Brolin didn’t give one. When asked about Avengers: Doomsday, he offered a single word that has the fandom buzzing: “Maybe.”

What Brolin Actually Said?

Brolin didn’t confirm or deny anything. He compared the idea of a comeback to The Goonies: everyone wants another one, but the real question is whether you should make one. He then pointed out that the project has come back around, that Joe Russo is involved, and that Thanos is one of his favourite characters ever. His verdict: “Maybe.”

It’s a familiar tune. In 2025, on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he said that if the Russos called him in London, he’d be on a plane the next day.

Why Fans Think Thanos Is Coming Back?

The theory has real support. Fans love a famous Secret Wars comic moment in which Doctor Doom humiliates Thanos, and bringing that to the screen would show how dangerous Doom is. But Thanos has already died twice on screen, so a quick cameo might not tempt Brolin.

A better fit is a partnership. Avengers Endgame: Encore revealed that Doom is travelling the multiverse and recruiting powerful people, with Bruce Banner as his first target. The Russos have confirmed Banner won’t be the last. A Thanos variant on Doom’s team would make the heroes’ odds look hopeless, and Doom could simply rewrite reality if his ally tried a coup.

Doomsday: What We Know

Robert Downey Jr. steps into the villain’s role after years as Iron Man. The Russos, who directed Infinity War and Endgame, are back, and Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers. The film lands on December 18, 2026, and sets up Avengers: Secret Wars for 2027.

One small correction: the source page still lists the old May 2026 date, but Disney’s official date is December 18.

Should You Believe the Hype?

Treat “Maybe” as a tease, not a confirmation. Actors are trained to protect Marvel’s secrets, and a coy answer is the safest one. Still, Brolin’s warm tone and the film’s multiverse setup keep the door wide open.
