OFFICIAL: Barcelona confirm the signing of Sergino Dest from Ajax for a reported fee of €26m

FC Barcelona have finally confirmed the long-awaited signing of Sergino Dest from Ajax, for a reported upfront fee of €21 million with €5 million in additional variables.

The US international at just 19 years of age, had the pick of his choices with both Bayern Munich and Barcelona both interested in the player. But after interactions with the management of the two clubs, Dest found conviction in joining Barcelona who are now starting a new regime under former player Ronald Koeman.

Dest has signed a five-year contract until 2025, with a buyout clause set at €400 million.

A highly athletic right-back, Dest is equally adept in attack as he is in defence. He is also an excellent passer of the ball often dropping into midfield to recycle possession if required.

It is a known fact that Ajax and Barcelona share closely rooted football styles, which hinges on attacking philosophy revolving around possession. The young defender does not hesitate to bomb down the right flank and ping in crosses of all types which in part led him to get 5 assists in the Eredivisie last season.

Sergino Dest has also taken the No. 2 shirt at Barcelona, after Nelsen Semedo’s departure from the club. It indicates a statement of intent from the defender to be involved with the first team from the very start.

His direct competition comes in the form of Sergi Roberto, although he would be considered a player making his presence felt more often in the midfield. It will certainly be interesting to see what kind of a partnership he forms with Lionel Messi on the right flank, considering how the full-back and winger often share a fruitful relationship in football.

Many Barca fans have said that they are still looking for the perfect replacement of Dani Alves who left the club in 2015. And one can only hope that Dest is that man destined to own up and make that right-back position his own.
