Prime Video’s Off Campus just wrapped its first season, and if you came in as a fan of Elle Kennedy‘s beloved Briar U book series, you probably noticed the show takes some bold swings away from the source material. The season finale, which dropped on May 13, 2026, is where those changes are most dramatic — and most deliberate. Here’s everything you need to know.

⚠️ Full spoiler warning for Off Campus Season 1.

Off Campus Recap: How Season 1 Ends

Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli) and Hannah Wells (Ella Bright) finally get their happily ever after — but it comes with complications. After a violent on-ice brawl where Garrett beats up Hannah’s rapist during a Briar U hockey match, he gets suspended, temporarily fracturing his relationship with Hannah. The two eventually reconcile once Garrett works through his core fear: that he might become his abusive father.

Meanwhile, a video of Garrett practicing with a professional team surfaces, rendering him ineligible for college hockey and wiping Briar U’s record clean. And in the final scene, mystery character Hunter Davenport (Charlie Evans) is introduced as Allie’s secret hookup — setting up a major plot thread for Season 2.

Book vs. Show: The Key Differences at a Glance

Plot Point	In the Book (The Deal)	In the Show
Who initiates the breakup	Hannah (pressured by Garrett’s dad)	Garrett (internal fear of becoming his father)
Reason for breakup	Financial blackmail from Garrett’s father	Garrett’s personal growth arc
Justin Kohl	Football player and Hannah’s crush	Rewritten as a singer-songwriter and rival to Garrett
Supporting characters Cass & Mary Jane	Present in Hannah’s singing competition	Cut and merged into Justin Kohl’s character
Logan’s parent in rehab	His father	Changed to his mother
Hunter Davenport	Appears in book 7 of the series	Introduced early as Dean/Allie’s storyline driver
Hannah’s rapist storyline	Less central	Central to the on-ice brawl and Garrett arc

Why Did the Show Change the Breakup?

This is the biggest structural shift. In Kennedy’s The Deal, Hannah breaks up with Garrett after his father threatens to cut off his tuition funding — a compelling dramatic lever. But the showrunners, Louisa Levy and Gina Fattore, recognised that the rise of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals in modern college sports makes financial blackmail a much weaker threat today. College athletes now earn through brand partnerships, making a father’s tuition ultimatum far less catastrophic.

So instead, the show grounds the breakup in Garrett’s psychology — his terror of repeating his father’s pattern of abuse. It’s a more emotionally nuanced change that pays off well on screen.

Who Is Hunter Davenport — and Why Does He Matter?

In Kennedy’s books, Hunter Davenport’s story doesn’t arrive until the seventh novel in the Briar U series. The show pulls him forward dramatically, introducing him in the finale as the man who slept with Allie (Mika Abdalla) — Dean’s (Stephen Kalyn) sister — and who is also being recruited to replace the now-ineligible Briar U starters.

It’s the show’s most significant structural deviation, and a clear signal that Off Campus isn’t simply adapting the books in order — it’s building its own expanded Briar U universe.

What’s Coming in Season 2?

Season 2 is confirmed to adapt The Mistake, Kennedy’s second book, centering on John Logan and his slow-burn romance with a girl immune to his charm. Garrett and Hannah will return as supporting characters, with the showrunners teasing that navigating a real relationship — with conflicting schedules, professional uncertainty, and genuine pressure — will be their new challenge. As Fattore put it, on shows like Dawson’s Creek, they just broke those kids up left and right.
