NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 & RTX 5080 Designs to Be Finalized This Month; 550W & 350W TGP Reported

NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 Are “On Track”, and are expected to be final designs in May as well Previous rumors suggested something along the lines that NVIDIA’s upcoming next-gen GeForce RTX 50 “Blackwell” GPUs would have TDPs of up to (gulp) 600W, with delays possibly a thing. The thing is, Benchlife claims designs will be finished this month.

More About the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 & RTX 5080

The GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 will be designed and completed in September, with NVIDIA also expected to launch the D models for both models – specifically, these are alleged to come under the guise of an alternate part name such as GeForce ‘RTX ‌4090‌D’ whereas previously we only saw a China-specific variant known under this moniker. The new “D” variants for the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 are expected to offer significant performance improvements over their predecessors.

The GeForce RTX 5090 and the 5080 have a reported TGP of 550W, whereas incremental flagship power consumption is lower in comparison to other cards. The 600W and 400W figures mentioned earlier are therefore most likely some of the maximum heat dissipation capacities expected for these new coolers instead of their actual power consumption.

That would give the RTX 5090 a TGP high of around +100W over the RTX 4090, while the RTX 5080 would exceed the RTX 4080’s TGP by 30W. Those figures seem more plausible than some earlier predictions as well – but in an ideal usage scenario not only will gaming workloads see lower actual consumption numbers (hitting TGPs during momentary spikes), but those limits are also avoided entirely processes due to Power Limiting.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090D is said to launch in China on January 2025 and apparently will be announced during CES. Additionally, NVIDIA plans to discontinue the RTX 4090D by December 2024. If the design finalizations proceed as planned, we might see a teaser or special event for the GeForce series in the coming months; otherwise, we may have to wait for 2025 for further updates.
