NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 and GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop GPUs were tested for their performance

Gaming laptops with NVIDIA’s fastest GeForce RTX 4090 & RTX 4080 GPUs are now available, and preliminary tests show some incredible performance gains. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 GPUs are the fastest available on gaming laptops.

They provide the greatest leap in performance from generation to generation while also delivering the highest levels of efficiency. Furthermore, these laptop chips include new and advanced features such as DLSS 3, which provides up to a 4x performance boost over native resolution.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU was first featured on a Zero Thunderobot machine tested by MyDrivers and can hit up to 170W of power during the benchmarks while keeping GPU core temperatures under 80C. The memory is seen running at a slightly higher temperature of 85C, but it is still well below its thermal threshold.

The GPU achieves 19,387 points in 3DMark Time Spy and 10,203 points in 3DMark Time Spy Extreme. In 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme, the same GPU scores 26,100 points, while in 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra, it scores 13,371 points. This represents a 60% performance increase over the previous generation’s flagship offering, the 3080 Ti Laptop GPU.

In the Furmark stress test, the GPU on the SCAR 17 runs at the same 175W power limit but achieves much lower temperatures of just 70C. Here, the GPU scored 22,044 points in 3DMark Time Spy and 26,526 points in 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme, representing a 13% increase over the 4090 on the other laptop. This performance is comparable to a desktop RTX 4070 Ti or RTX 3090 graphics card.

The flagship GeForce RTX 4090 features the NVIDIA AD103 GPU core with 76 SMs or 9728 CUDA cores, the same core configuration as the desktop-class RTX 4080, and TGP options ranging from 150W to 175W (+25W Dynamic Boost). The 150W TGP target will have a base clock range of 1590 MHz and a boost clock range of 2040 MHz. In addition, there is a 25W Dynamic Boost that allows for even higher boost clocks.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 16 GB, on the other hand, has 58 SMs with 7424 cores and a memory configuration with 12 GB GDDR6 capacity running across a 192-bit interface. The GPU is the Ada AD104 design, which is a scaled-down version of the chip used in the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Desktop graphics card. In fact, the GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop GPU has nearly 24% fewer cores than the RTX 4080 desktop graphics card.
