Italian footballer Nicolo Zaniolo, currently playing for Fiorentina, finds himself at the center of a troubling controversy following an alleged altercation involving two Roma youth players. The incident, which reportedly occurred after a heated Primavera semi-final clash between Fiorentina and Roma, has prompted an investigation by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and could result in a severe disciplinary outcome for the former Roma star.

Alleged Post-Match Altercation at Viola Park

The controversy stems from events that transpired on May 26, following Fiorentina’s 2-1 triumph over Roma in the Primavera youth league title play-off semi-final. Zaniolo, who was in attendance as a spectator, is accused by his former club of intruding into Roma’s locker room area and physically confronting two of their youth players—Mattia Almaviva and Marco Litti.

“On the evening of May 26, at the end of the Primavera Fiorentina-AS Roma semi-final played at Viola Park, Nicolo Zaniolo (a player from the Fiorentina first team) illegally broke into the Roma locker room area, accompanied by an acquaintance, despite not having accreditation,” Roma’s official statement claimed.

Roma’s Statement Details Serious Accusations

Roma’s communication went on to provide a vivid account of the alleged events:

“According to witnesses, Zaniolo appeared visibly upset. He urinated in the facilities reserved for Roma, provoked the players and, without any verbal exchange, physically hit Mattia Almaviva and violently pushed Marco Litti against a bench. Litti was recovering from shoulder surgery. Both players were examined in hospital: Almaviva received a prognosis of 10 days, Litti 21 days.”

The club expressed firm support for its young players, describing the alleged actions as “violent and unjustifiable,” and called on authorities to enforce disciplinary measures.

“AS Roma expresses its full solidarity with its young players and is deeply outraged by the violent and unjustifiable behavior that occurred at Viola Park. We trust that the competent institutions will act decisively to ensure justice and protect the values of Italian football.”

Zaniolo’s Defense: ‘Provoked’ and Regretful

In response, Zaniolo, who spent the 2023–24 campaign on loan at Aston Villa from Galatasaray, issued a denial through Fiorentina and later expanded on his version via social media.

“At the end of the match, I went down to the locker room to congratulate the Fiorentina boys and then I went to the Roma locker room to greet and congratulate them on their season too,” Zaniolo said in a Fiorentina statement. “But at a certain point they started insulting me so, at that point, to prevent the situation from degenerating, I preferred to leave.”

On Instagram, Zaniolo further acknowledged his poor judgment while disputing the physical nature of the encounter.

“I want to apologise with all my heart for what happened yesterday,” he wrote. “I know I reacted in a bad way and I take full responsibility. I went there with the sole intention of sending a positive signal, of being close to the boys in a difficult moment after the match.”

“Unfortunately, I was verbally provoked by a boy and, mistakenly, I lost my temper. It is a mistake that weighs on me, especially because I know I have to be an example for young people. However, I want to point out that the facts are far from what has been reconstructed and that on my part, apart from a verbal argument, there was no physically aggressive behaviour.”

A Career at the Crossroads Once Again

Once hailed as one of Italy’s brightest footballing talents, Zaniolo’s journey has been plagued by setbacks—primarily due to injuries. After his breakout at Roma, he was named Serie A’s Young Player of the Year in 2019 and even earned a senior national team debut that same year. However, his progress was halted by multiple injuries, including a metatarsal fracture during his brief stint in the Premier League with Aston Villa, which ruled him out of the European Championship.

Possible Consequences Await

The Italian Football Federation has reportedly launched an official inquiry into the matter. If the accusations are substantiated, Zaniolo could be facing a substantial ban that might significantly impact his future at both club and national levels.

Given the gravity of the claims and Roma’s unequivocal call for justice, all eyes now turn to the FIGC to determine the next course of action. In the meantime, Zaniolo’s career, already marked by dramatic highs and lows, faces yet another uncertain chapter.
