Newcastle vs Liverpool Match Preview, Prediction, Timings, Lineups, Teams, and How to Watch

The Premier League’s biggest early-season litmus test lands at St. James’ Park as Newcastle United host Liverpool on Sunday, August 23, 2026. It’s Matchweek 1, but this fixture never feels like a routine opener — these two have traded dramatic results for years, and both sides will want to start the campaign with a statement.

Liverpool arrive as the more successful side historically, boasting 19 wins from the head-to-head record compared to Newcastle’s 5, with 7 draws between them. But Eddie Howe’s Newcastle have made home advantage count time and again, and a raucous St. James’ Park crowd will fancy their chances of an opening-day upset. fotmob

Prediction

Liverpool’s superior head-to-head record and squad quality make them slight favourites, but Newcastle’s home form and physical approach have troubled them before. Expect a tight, tactical battle — a narrow Liverpool win or a share of the spoils feels most likely.
