Netflix’s “Outback”: Squid Game And Umbrella Academy Stars Just Joined This Mystery Thriller

Netflix is building one of its most stacked K-drama casts yet — and this time, the mystery isn’t set in Seoul. “Outback” is filming in Australia right now, and the lineup keeps getting bigger.

What Is “Outback” About?

Based on the webtoon G’day by Choi Yong Sung, “Outback” follows Shion, a man who travels to Australia after losing contact with his sister, Shiyoung. Staying at the share house she once lived in, he begins to suspect the people around her know more about her disappearance than they’re letting on. The series is directed by Jeon Doo Kwan, known for Scene: Strange Tales.

The Cast Lineup

Production Status & Release Window

Filming began in Australia in June 2026 and is expected to wrap by December 2026. Given the usual post-production timeline for Netflix K-dramas, fans can realistically expect “Outback” to land sometime in late 2027 or the first half of 2028.

Why It’s Worth Watching For

This isn’t just another missing-person thriller — it’s a rare crossover project pairing Korea’s biggest acting talent with a Western star best known for genre TV. Ryu Jun Yeol continues his Netflix streak after The 8 Show and Revelations, while Jung Ho Yeon returns to acting for the first time since Squid Game made her a household name. Add Justin H. Min in a pivotal, non-supporting role, and “Outback” has the ingredients of a true international breakout.
