Nobody saw this coming. Despite a dramatic fall in viewership between seasons, Netflix has officially confirmed that Breathless — the Spanish medical drama known as Respira in Spain — is returning for a third season. For fans who stuck with the show through Season 2’s chaotic finale at Joaquín Sorolla Hospital, this is the news you’ve been waiting for.

Netflix announced the renewal in February 2026 via a social media post from Netflix España, making it official after months of speculation.

What Makes This Breathless Renewal Surprising?

Season 2 of Breathless dropped on October 31, 2025 and underperformed significantly compared to the debut season. While Season 1 spent 5 weeks in Netflix’s global top 10 and accumulated over 103 million viewing hours, Season 2 managed only 2 weeks in the top 10 and around 30.3 million viewing hours — a drop of roughly 57%. The show also ranked in the top 10 across 69 countries in Season 1, but that figure fell to just 32 in Season 2.

Still, Netflix pressed ahead. Some Spanish outlets have suggested Season 3 may have already been filmed alongside Season 2, hinting that new episodes could arrive sooner than expected.

What to Expect in Season 3

Season 3 is expected to pick up right from the cliffhanger ending of Season 2. Will Jessica survive the shocking attack by a troubled patient? Can May find her footing after losing custody of her baby? And with major political decisions threatening the hospital’s very future, the personal and professional stakes have never been higher.

Breathless has often been compared to Grey’s Anatomy — the long-running American medical drama known for juggling intense hospital emergencies with deeply personal character arcs. Created by Carlos Montero, the mastermind behind Elite, Breathless brings that same addictive energy to the world of Spanish medical television.
