Sometimes the biggest streaming news isn’t a flashy new original — it’s a legacy TV giant finally deciding to play ball. Netflix has struck its first-ever licensing deal with Talpa, and it’s bringing over 300 episodes of beloved Dutch television straight into subscribers’ queues in the Netherlands.

What Shows Are Coming to Netflix?
The deal brings a genuine lineup of Dutch television staples to the platform. Leading the pack is “Chateau Meiland,” the reality series that turned the Meiland family into a national phenomenon on SBS6. Also joining are “Het Roer Om” and its spin-off “Hoe Is Het Nu Met?”, both unscripted shows following Dutch locals rebuilding their lives from scratch elsewhere. Rounding out the list are “Overtreders,” which follows enforcement officers on the job, along with “Mr. Frank Visser Doet Uitspraak,” “Waar Is Mijn Erfenis?”, and “Bureau Onrecht.”

Why Talpa Chose Netflix Over Building Its Own Platform
What makes this deal particularly interesting is what Talpa didn’t do. Unlike RTL, which built out Videoland into one of the Netherlands’ leading subscription services, Talpa never launched a competing streamer of its own, despite John de Mol’s global reputation for formats like Big Brother and The Voice. Instead, the company is licensing its existing catalog directly to where viewers already are.
Marloes Sturkenboom, Talpa’s Managing Director of Group Content & Global IP, framed the move around audience reach rather than platform ownership, noting that viewers today aren’t tied to a single service and that the company’s strategy is about finding new ways to make its content available more broadly.
Netflix’s Bigger Dutch Push
This licensing deal lands as part of a broader Netflix strategy to deepen its footprint in the Netherlands. The platform already has an expanding slate of Dutch originals, including “Haantjes,” “Yolanthe,” and the upcoming thriller “De Eetclub” (releasing internationally as “The Perfect Lie” on September 10), plus a localized version of the hit format Love Is Blind currently in the works. Lucy Leveugle, Netflix’s VP of EMEA Creative Strategy and Benelux Content, described the Talpa partnership as reinforcing Netflix’s position as the go-to entertainment destination for Dutch audiences.
What’s Still Unclear
Netflix hasn’t confirmed an exact date for when the 300-plus episodes will actually go live, and it remains uncertain whether this licensing arrangement is exclusive to the Netherlands, though most local deals like this typically are.
Streaming licensing deals like this one are becoming a common playbook worldwide, echoing similar moves Netflix has made in other markets.
