Netflix India’s New Bet: Movies Short Enough To Finish Over Lunch

Got 90 minutes and a craving for a full story arc, not a cliffhanger? Netflix India just heard you. The streamer is quietly building out a slate of under-90-minute films — compact 60-to-85-minute features designed for viewers who can’t always commit to a full 2-3 hour movie night. Think lunch breaks, commutes, or that small gap between work and dinner.

Why Netflix Is Betting On Shorter Films?

According to industry sources, Netflix hasn’t officially branded this as a new production category, but insiders describe it as part of the platform’s broader growth strategy. The idea: give creators room to experiment with genres like taut thrillers, intimate family dramas, and high-concept comedies — stories that often work better at a tighter runtime than a bloated three-hour format. It’s also simply more efficient: cheaper to produce, faster to shoot, and easier to greenlight unconventional ideas.

Netflix already runs a global Movies Under 90 Minutes category for content discovery, featuring titles like Bad Trip and Vampires vs. the Bronx. But India marks something different — one of the first markets where Netflix is systematically commissioning original films built to that runtime from the ground up.

The Proof: Greater Kalesh’s Breakout Success

The trend didn’t come out of nowhere. Greater Kalesh, a 52-minute comedy-drama starring Ahsaas Channa, quietly became Netflix India’s proof of concept — landing in the Global Top 10 Non-English list with 1.7 million hours viewed in its first week alone (October 2025).

What’s Coming Next?

Multiple new projects are already in the works. One is being directed by NH10 filmmaker Navdeep Singh, while another comes from Aanand L. Rai’s Yellow Color Productions, helmed by Pushkar Mahabal of Black, White & Gray: Love Kills fame.

If this format takes off, expect India’s streaming landscape to shift toward tighter, punchier storytelling — no more three-hour commitments required.
