My Best Friend, His Girlfriend and Me: Netflix’s New German Comedy Isn’t the Buddy Movie You Want

Netflix’s new German-language comedy My Best Friend, His Girlfriend and Me landed on August 14, 2026 — and critics are not impressed. Written and directed by Marco Petry, the film promises a classic buddy-comedy setup but delivers something closer to an uncomfortable watch about toxic friendship dynamics.

‘My Best Friend, His Girlfriend and Me- Overview

What’s the Story?

The plot follows Olli (Kostja Ullmann), a self-centered best friend, and Matze (David Kross), the more sensitive half of a decades-long friendship. Their plans for a year-long trip together fall apart when Matze falls for a client named Rebecca (Janina Uhse), sparking a jealous rivalry that consumes the rest of the film.

Why It Doesn’t Work

Reviewers point to a core problem: the comedy leans entirely on shock value and cruelty rather than earned laughs or genuine chemistry. Olli comes across as a detestable man-child, while Matze’s constant enabling reads less like loyalty and more like an unhealthy dynamic the film never bothers to examine. Female characters fare especially poorly, reduced to either naggy obstacles or manic pixie dream girls with little room in between.

Even with likeable leads, the film’s insistence on dragging out every joke and leaning into juvenile slapstick makes for a long, unrewarding watch — one critic noted it ranks among the platform’s weakest international originals.
