Prime Video’s acclaimed spy drama Mr. & Mrs. Smith has landed another name for its highly anticipated second season. Francesca Scorsese (We Are Who We Are) will star as a Jane Smith in the new season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which started production in Los Angeles last month. The addition expands an already stacked Season 2 ensemble and signals that Amazon MGM Studios and New Regency are leaning into the show’s anthology-style direction.
What Francesca Scorsese Will Play
The casting was first reported on May 19, 2026, and quickly confirmed across major trade outlets, joining a roster that includes previously announced leads Mark Eydelshteyn and Talia Ryder.
Plot details for Season 2 remain tightly guarded, but the broad shape of her role is clear. The new season is being joined by younger Mr. and Mrs. Smith pairs, one of them played by Mark Eydelshteyn and Talia Ryder. Scorsese is believed to be part of another couple.
That fits the in-universe logic established in Season 1: John and Jane Smith are codenames in the Mr. & Mrs. Smithiverse, used by different spy partnerships. Season 1 already played with that idea — season one also featured Alexander Skarsgård and Eiza González as the First Other John and Jane — so adding more Smiths in Season 2 is a natural escalation.
Season 2 Cast So Far
| Role | Actor | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| New Jane Smith (lead pair) | Talia Ryder | Season 2’s focus would shift to a new John and Jane Smith pairing, portrayed by Mark Eydelshteyn and Talia Ryder |
| New John Smith (lead pair) | Mark Eydelshteyn | Co-leads the new pairing |
| Another Jane Smith | Francesca Scorsese | Francesca Scorsese has joined the cast as another Jane Smith |
| Original John Smith | Donald Glover | Season 1 leads Glover and Maya Erskine are believed to be reprising their John Smith and Jane Smith roles, respectively; to what extent is unclear |
| Original Jane Smith | Maya Erskine | Returning in unspecified capacity |
It’s worth noting one casting change before this announcement: Yellowjackets actress Sophie Thatcher was originally in talks for season 2, but has since dropped out.
Donald Glover Steps Behind The Camera More
Beyond reprising his John Smith role, Donald Glover is taking on an expanded directorial role. Series co-creator, executive producer and Season 1 star Donald Glover is set to direct multiple episodes in Season 2 after helming the Season 1 finale.
That continuity matters because Glover’s direction in the Season 1 finale was central to the cliffhanger that ended the first run, and his deeper involvement in Season 2 signals that the show’s creative voice remains tightly held.
Who Is Francesca Scorsese?
She’s built a notable acting résumé independent of her famous surname. Scorsese is the daughter of legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese. She has become an actor in her own right in recent years, starring in shows like the HBO/Sky Atlantic series “We Are Who We Are” as well as films like “Roommates” and “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point.”
Her most prominent prior TV work — Scorsese was part of the main cast of HBO/Sky Atlantic’s 2020 coming-of-age limited series We Are Who We Are, co-created and directed by Luca Guadagnino — gives her a strong pedigree in prestige, character-driven drama, the exact tonal lane Mr. & Mrs. Smith operates in.

Why Season 2 Looks Different
There are two big structural shifts shaping Season 2:
- Anthology format. Mr. & Mrs. Smith is reportedly moving forward as an anthology series, as opposed to continuing the story of the two lead actors from the first season. That explains the multiple Mr. and Mrs. Smith couples being cast.
- New showrunner. Anna Ouyang Moench serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer alongside Glover for Season 2. That’s a creative handoff from Season 1 showrunner Francesca Sloane, signaling fresh perspective at the top of the writers’ room.
Behind The Scenes And Production Status
Season 2 is already underway. The season was initially set to film in fall 2025 but was put on an indefinite delay, before resuming earlier this year. The producing team is mostly continuous from Season 1: 1Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Stephen Glover, Anthony Katagas and Fam Udeorji return as executive producers, joined by Erskine.
The show’s pedigree also helps explain the high-profile casting pulls. Mr. & Mrs. Smith earned 16 Emmy nominations for its first season in 2024, winning two statuettes.

What To Expect From Scorsese’s Storyline
While specifics are locked down, the show’s structure gives us a reasonable preview. Each “Smith” pairing in Season 1 represented a different operational era and dynamic, which means Scorsese’s Jane likely anchors a parallel storyline that intersects with — or counterpoints — the new Eydelshteyn–Ryder lead duo. Whether her partner is revealed via another casting announcement or kept as a Season 2 surprise remains to be seen.
