What Is Monk About?

Starring Tony Shalhoub, Bitty Schram, Jason Gray-Stanford, and Ted Levine, the series follows Adrian Monk, a former San Francisco detective who has moved on to consulting a police force whilst battling OCD.

What sounds like a simple police procedural is actually something much richer — a deeply human character study wrapped in genuinely clever mysteries. Monk’s obsessive-compulsive disorder isn’t played for cheap laughs; it’s the very thing that makes him the most observant detective imaginable, noticing the tiny details everyone else misses. Tony Shalhoub’s Emmy-winning performance is one of television’s all-time great comedic-dramatic turns. Learn more about the Monk TV series on Wikipedia.

Why Is Monk Now on Netflix?

The news of Monk coming to Netflix comes off the back of Netflix upping its licensing game. Netflix always needs fresh content to keep eyeballs on its service, and other distributors are in need of cash as they look to diversify their balance sheets.

Netflix notably picked up Suits in the United States in 2023, which also first aired on USA Network and broke Nielsen records throughout the year. Other big licensed titles headed to Netflix in the US throughout 2024 include over a dozen Disney-owned series, and outside of the United States, shows like Yellowstone, House MD, and NCIS are being licensed globally.

Classic beloved series are clearly Netflix’s smart play for subscriber retention — and Monk, with its built-in multigenerational fanbase, is a perfect addition. The show scooped 8 Primetime Emmys throughout its run and remains a fan-favourite to this day.

Until now, the show had resided on both Peacock and Prime Video, with Peacock commissioning a follow-up movie called Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, released on December 8, 2023.
