Mohanlal on Patriot’s Mixed Reviews: “Success Can’t Be Predicted — Not Even for Drishyam 3”

There is something quietly profound about a legend choosing grace over defensiveness. When Patriot received a wave of mixed reactions from audiences, Mohanlal — one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated actors — didn’t shy away from the conversation. He walked right into it, with honesty and remarkable humility.

What Mohanlal Said About Patriot’s Reception

Speaking with Galatta Plus, Mohanlal acknowledged the mixed response, saying he personally liked the film and that when the story was narrated to him, it felt very different and appealing. He described filmmaking as a very secret recipe — you never quite know how it will turn out.

But what struck listeners most was this: Mohanlal said that when he takes on a role, he does it with complete love and confidence, with 100% sincerity and commitment as his personal standard — and that the success of a film cannot be predicted, not even for Drishyam 3.

That last line, spoken just days before Drishyam 3‘s release, shows a man who has earned every bit of his legendary status — not just through his craft, but through his groundedness.

Why Patriot Didn’t Land the Way Audiences Expected

Mohanlal also reflected on why audiences who accepted his tragic character deaths in emotionally resonant films like Thanmathra and Thalavattam responded differently to his role in Patriot — noting that those earlier films had character development rooted in deep emotional connection, while in Patriot, that connection may not have formed because it was a smaller role.

It is a remarkably self-aware analysis from an actor who could have simply deflected criticism. Instead, he essentially gave audiences a masterclass in why emotional investment in a character matters more than any amount of star power.

Mohanlal’s Packed Work Front Ahead

Mohanlal is next set to reprise his iconic role as Georgekutty in Drishyam 3, directed by Jeethu Joseph. The film will explore Georgekutty and his family becoming entangled in the consequences of their past actions, while also delving into the protagonist’s emotional turmoil.

The film stars Meena, Esther Anil, Ansiba Hassan, Asha Sarath, Veena Nandakumar, Murali Gopy, and Siddique alongside Mohanlal, and was initially slated for April 2, 2026, before being postponed to coincide with Mohanlal’s birthday.

Looking further ahead, he will also star in Athimanoharam, a cop action-comedy directed by Tharun Moorthy of Thudarum fame, with Meera Jasmine as co-lead.
