The final trailer for Minions & Monsters is here, and if you thought the yellow guys had already caused enough trouble across six previous Despicable Me films, buckle up — because this time they’re taking on Hollywood itself, summoning ancient creatures, and very nearly destroying the planet in the process. You know, as you do when you’re trying to make a monster movie.

Illumination’s Minions & Monsters — the third instalment in the Minions prequel series and the seventh film in the overall Despicable Me franchise — hits cinemas on July 1, 2026, and the final trailer makes one thing absolutely clear: this is going to be delightfully, spectacularly unhinged.

What’s the Minions Story?

Set roughly 40 years before the events of the original Minions (2015), the film drops us into 1920s Hollywood — an era of black-and-white cinema, walk-of-fame handprints, and apparently, Minions becoming legitimate movie stars. The premise, which Illumination is cheekily calling “totally true,” follows a Minion named James who has a genuine gift for filmmaking. He conceives an ambitious monster movie — Minions Y Monstras — and decides the only way to make it authentic is to cast real monsters.

To find them, James and his crew summon Goomi (full name: Gary Orkam Oliver Magma Ichabod the Deceiver), a small, enthusiastic creature voiced by Trey Parker, who leads them to a mysterious island packed with bona fide monsters. The plan goes predictably sideways when they bring back Irene — a giant, eyeball-covered creature who, once in Hollywood, is on course to destroy everything on the planet. Oops.

The Trailer in a Nutshell

The final trailer opens in black and white, establishes the Minions as 1920s Hollywood royalty, and rapidly escalates into full creature-feature chaos. There are shark encounters, a spellbook, a small Cthulhu-adjacent creature, monster casting sessions, and the kind of slapstick escalation that has made this franchise a global box office institution. Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri described it as delivering a full dose of irreverence — and the footage suggests that’s no understatement

A Cast Worth Noting

Pierre Coffin returns as the voice of the Minions (Henry, James, Ed, and the rest of the yellow horde), joined by a genuinely surprising ensemble: Trey Parker as Goomi, Christoph Waltz as the film’s director character, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Jeff Bridges, Bobby Moynihan, Phil LaMarr, and Allison Janney. It’s an odd and wonderful collection of voices for what is, at its core, a film about tiny creatures accidentally importing a planet-threatening monster to 1920s Los Angeles.

Notably, the film will be the first in the entire Despicable Me franchise not scored by longtime series composer Heitor Pereira, with Migration and The Lorax composer John Powell stepping in instead.

Where to Watch — and When

After its theatrical run kicks off July 1, the film will stream on Peacock in the US for its first four months as part of Universal’s long-term streaming deal, then move to Netflix for ten months, before returning to Peacock. So whether you catch it in cinemas this summer or wait for streaming, it’s coming to your screen one way or another.
