Microsoft had to use development consoles for its own HCS Kickoff Major Raleigh 2021 event

Don’t worry if you can’t get your hands on an Xbox Series X; even Microsoft can’t get them, so some competitors in Halo Infinite’s first major tournament had to use development consoles used internally for testing.

The HCS Kickoff Major Raleigh 2021, Halo Infinite’s first major in-person professional tournament, is currently underway, and some competitors are using “development” consoles due to ongoing semiconductor shortages.

343 Industries’ esports lead Tashi said on Twitter: “Heads up open bracket players – you’ll be playing this weekend on Series X development consoles. They’re functionally identical and will be operating in ‘Retail’ mode so it’s the same experience, they just look a little different.”

Tashi, 343’s eSports lead, recently revealed this on Twitter. The open bracket players will compete on Series X development units that are “functionally identical” and run in “retail” mode. As a result, even if the consoles themselves look different, players on those machines can expect the ” same experience.”

This is only taking place as a result of the ongoing shortages. Tashi stated, “The global supply chain shortage is real.” Despite some competitors’ unusual approaches to the event, the HCS Kickoff Major Raleigh 2021 is off to a good start. The event has already become the “highest viewed Halo eSports event of all time” in just one day of competition, according to Tashi.

By watching the event, Halo Infinite players can earn in-game cosmetics. Twitch drops can be earned if users link their Twitch accounts to their Halo Waypoint accounts. To do so, they must watch one hour of the official stream and will be rewarded with three colour-changing weapon coatings. Instead, Halo Infinite players can earn armour coating for their multiplayer Spartans by watching an hour of one of the co-partnered streamers.

“Thank you to everyone who has been watching from all across the world!” Tashi went on to say. However, no exact viewership figures were provided.

The HCS Raleigh event occurs from December 17 to 19, with a total prize pool of $250,000, plus additional funds raised through crowdfunding from Halo Infinite microtransaction sales. Keep coming back to see what’s new.
