Microsoft is updating the available backgrounds in Microsoft Teams and adding new animated variations. It’s the most significant upgrade to Teams’ virtual backdrops since the first collection debuted in 2020, with new options to replace the cluttered area behind you with a lovely environment.
These will begin with a significant collection of new still photos, followed by animated versions in June. Microsoft has released some information about the new static backdrop imagery today, but it appears that we’ll have to wait until next month to see how these moving backgrounds compare to the ones available on rival Zoom for years.
“Featuring all-new images, the reimagined visual library for Teams has been thoughtfully designed to represent the people that use them and how they work best,” says the Microsoft design team in a new blog post. “Looking at the popularity of certain images, we noticed that customers are equally enthusiastic about being depicted in fun and imaginative scenes as they are being portrayed in realistic spaces like a coworking space, office, or home.”
Microsoft Teams backdrops are now divided into six types, including those that emphasise wood and light, those that are modern, and those that are colourful clouds or mountains.
There are also accessible backdrops that take into account how patterns and materials may influence those on the autistic spectrum. These are part of a bigger “belonging” category that includes vision, hearing, mental health, and other topics. The new backdrops will be available to Microsoft Teams’ 300 million monthly active users.
