When a six-year-old documentary suddenly reclaims its spot on Netflix’s coveted Top 10 list, you know something remarkable is happening. Michelle Obama’s inspiring 2020 documentary Becoming has made an unexpected comeback, climbing to #6 on Netflix US just as rival documentary Melania hits theaters. Here’s the compelling story behind this cultural moment.

Michelle Obama’s Becoming’s Netflix Revival

Why Is Becoming Trending Again?

The resurgence isn’t accidental. A viral #BecomingOverMelania campaign swept across social media platforms including TikTok, X (Twitter), and Threads over the weekend. Users coordinated a streaming push as counter-programming to Amazon MGM Studios’ theatrical release of Melania, which opened with an estimated $7 million despite controversies surrounding its $75 million total budget.

This grassroots movement demonstrates the power of engaged audiences who view streaming metrics as a form of cultural expression and resistance. Netflix’s algorithm heavily weights recent viewership velocity, making it susceptible to coordinated streaming campaigns.

What Makes Becoming Special?

The Higher Ground Productions documentary follows the former First Lady during her book tour, offering intimate glimpses into her life, aspirations, and genuine connections with everyday Americans. Directed by Nadia Hallgren, the film earned multiple award nominations and remains one of Netflix’s most impactful biographical documentaries.
