Meta’s Fight Against Child Exploitation: Inside The Numbers And Policies

Child safety remains one of the most serious challenges tech platforms face, and Meta has just published a detailed update on how it’s tackling this issue across Facebook, Instagram, and its other apps.

Why This Update Matters

The statement comes amid recent news reports about Instagram ads in India that violated Meta’s child exploitation policies. Meta stated that its enforcement systems had already identified and disabled several of these violating ads and accounts before the reports surfaced, with further investigation leading to additional removals and blocked URLs.

How Meta Reviews Ads

Meta relies on a mix of automated and manual reviews to catch violations before ads even run, while also monitoring broader advertiser behavior rather than just individual ads. Business accounts found violating policy can be restricted entirely from advertising across Meta’s platforms, and the company noted that any user can report an ad believed to break these rules.

The Numbers Behind Enforcement

Meta highlighted several data points showing the scale of its efforts, including AI systems now covering languages spoken by 98% of people online, up from roughly 80 languages previously.

Industry-Wide Collaboration

Meta also pointed to its role as a founding member of Lantern, a cross-platform intelligence-sharing initiative from the Tech Coalition, along with its work supporting the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Take It Down tool for preventing the spread of young people’s intimate images.

Organizations like NCMEC play a central role in coordinating global child protection efforts across the tech industry — read more about the organization on Wikipedia.
