Rachel Brosnahan’s High-Stakes Role

Five-time Emmy nominee Rachel Brosnahan steps into the spotlight as Leila Reynolds, an ambitious junior defense attorney thrust into uncharted territory. She’s assigned to defend Jack Millman in the murder case of a highly respected judge—but there’s a problem. Reynolds is completely out of her depth, yet Millman refuses to work with anyone else. The twisted complication? Her husband is the prosecutor determined to win a conviction.

Fresh off playing Lois Lane in James Gunn’s Superman, Brosnahan brings her signature intensity to this complex legal thriller. She’ll also executive produce Season 2, marking her first major TV role since The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel wrapped its acclaimed five-season run.

Emmy Winners Stacked Throughout

Matthew Rhys plays Reynolds’ prosecutor husband, creating an explosive marriage-versus-career dynamic. The Emmy winner from The Americans recently showcased his dramatic chops in HBO’s Perry Mason reboot, making him perfectly suited for morally complex legal territory.

Courtney B. Vance, who won an Emmy for The People v. O.J. Simpson, portrays Leila’s boss at the law firm. Meanwhile, Fiona Shaw (three-time Emmy nominee for Killing Eve) plays a senior partner who serves as Leila’s second chair. Shaw’s recent standout performances in Andor prove she excels at layered, unpredictable characters.

Jack Reynor takes on Jack Millman, the defendant with secrets who insists only Leila can represent him. His unsettling performances in Midsommar and The Perfect Couple suggest this character has disturbing depths.

Why No Season 1 Cast Returns

Jake Gyllenhaal won’t reprise his role as prosecutor Rusty Sabich, though he remains involved as executive producer through his Nine Stories production banner. The Season 1 finale provided complete closure to the Carolyn Polhemus murder case with its jaw-dropping reveal, allowing the series to adopt an anthology format exploring entirely new legal nightmares each season.

David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies, The Practice) returns as showrunner alongside co-showrunner Erica Lipez, with J.J. Abrams continuing as executive producer through Bad Robot Productions.
