The Ambidextrous Ace: A Cricketing Anomaly

A bowler who can switch between right-arm off-spin and left-arm orthodox with the ease of changing gears in a sports car. Sounds like something out of a cricket video game, right? Well, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s latest acquisition, Kamindu Mendis, is making this mind-bending skill a reality in IPL 2025.

But who exactly is this 26-year-old phenomenon that’s got the cricketing world buzzing? Let’s dive into the extraordinary journey of Kamindu Mendis, the only ambidextrous player in IPL history.

From Galle to Greatness: Kamindu’s Cricket Odyssey

Born on September 30, 1998, in the picturesque city of Galle, Kamindu Mendis was destined for cricketing greatness. His unique ability to bowl with both arms first caught the world’s attention during the 2016 Under-19 World Cup, where he captained the Sri Lankan team. Talk about making a first impression!

But Mendis isn’t just a one-trick pony. This left-handed batsman has been steadily climbing the ranks in Sri Lankan cricket, showcasing his versatility across all formats of the game. His international debut in 2018 was just the beginning of what promises to be a stellar career.

The IPL 2025 Auction: Sunrisers’ Strategic Steal

When the hammer fell at the IPL 2025 auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad had secured Mendis for a steal at INR 75 Lakh. Little did they know they were getting a 2-in-1 deal with his ambidextrous bowling skills!

Mendis’ Magic Moment: Bewildering Batsmen in Orange

Fast forward to April 3, 2025. The Eden Gardens is buzzing with anticipation as Sunrisers Hyderabad takes on Kolkata Knight Riders. As Mendis steps up to bowl, something extraordinary happens. Then, as if performing a magic trick, he seamlessly switches to right-arm off-spin when Venkatesh Iyer takes strike.
