MediaTek is reportedly the most dominant chipset provider in Q4 2023

According to data from Canalys, MediaTek has become the top global provider of smartphone chips based on shipments in the fourth quarter of 2023. More than 117 million smartphones with MediaTek chips have been supplied by the Taiwanese business. With 78 million and 69 million shipments, respectively, Apple and Qualcomm rank second and third.

The complete fiscal year is not covered in the report; it just covers the period from October to December 2023. In the chipset provider market, Mediatek, Apple, and Qualcomm held a dominant position. The Kirin 9000S-powered Mate 60 and Nova 12 smartphones, which retail for an average of $1000, were the main drivers of HiSilicon, a company controlled by Huawei, generating $7 billion in revenue from 7 million devices.

In terms of revenue from smartphone sales, Apple continues to lead even while MediaTek leads in shipments. The revenue of USD 87 billion generated by the iPhone maker was responsible for the company’s 20% year-over-year growth. The high cost of Apple’s iPhones is probably the main factor in the company’s revenue domination.

China also surprised us by revealing a 24% YoY growth in revenue and volume for phones utilizing Unisoc chipsets. The Transsion brand, which encompasses the well-known brands Infinix, Tecno, and iTel in emerging markets, accounted for half of the phones featuring SoCs from this vendor.

Conversely, shipments of phones featuring an Exynos chip fell by 48% for Samsung Semiconductor. This reduction was a factor in the quarterly revenue decline, which was $44% less than the prior year at $5 billion.

As a result of the expected release of the Galaxy A55, which will sport the Exynos 1480 chipset later this month, and the increasing sales of the Exynos 2400-powered Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+, the research projects a possible boost in the first half of 2024. With chip suppliers and smartphone makers preparing for intense competition and innovation, the market dynamics are primed for fascinating changes in the upcoming months.
