Why Ryan Reynolds’ Mayday Is the Cold War Thriller to Watch

What happens when an American fighter pilot is shot down deep behind enemy lines during the height of the Cold War? IGN has officially released the gripping trailer for Mayday, a high-octane action adventure that teams global superstar Ryan Reynolds with multi-Academy Award nominee Kenneth Branagh.

A High-Stakes Battle Behind Soviet Borders in Mayday

The story centers on an American fighter pilot (Ryan Reynolds) who accidentally crosses into Soviet airspace and is shot down. Waking up injured and tied to a bed in a makeshift medical clinic, he discovers a local doctor has saved his life by repairing a damaged artery—without any proper anesthesia.

The pilot’s unexpected savior is a quirky Soviet local who happens to be obsessed with American culture, movies, and the elusive taste of McDonald’s. However, their lighthearted banter is cut short as the Red Army begins closing in. To survive, the pilot must team up with his unlikely ally to fight their way across treacherous, frozen landscapes, dodge enemy patrols, and find a way back home. Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Mayday seamlessly blends explosive action choreography, intense close-quarters combat, and sharp, witty buddy-comedy chemistry.
