Season 2 of Maxton Hall does what only the best romantic dramas can: it takes a love story you already care about and finds a way to make you care more.
The decision to open with tragedy rather than romance is a bold structural move — and it pays off. James Beaufort in pain is a different, more textured character than James Beaufort in pursuit, and Damian Hardung rises to the expanded emotional demands with a performance that is, at its best moments, genuinely heartbreaking. Harriet Herbig-Matten matches him beat for beat as Ruby — a young woman who refuses to be consumed by love but cannot quite survive without it either.
The Campbell Gala sequence is the season’s visual and emotional centrepiece — lavish, dangerous, and simmering with the kind of tension this series has always done better than almost anyone. The six-episode format keeps everything tight. There is no filler. Every scene earns its place.
Season 3 is already confirmed and will be based on Save Us — the trilogy’s finale. If this season is the measure, that conclusion cannot come quickly enough.
