Mattu Pongal Kolam: Understanding Mattu Pongal

Mattu Pongal falls on the third day of the Pongal festival. In the north of the Tamil Nadu area of South India, it is the Maatu Pongal day when the shift from Krishna to solar calendar has been noticed by farmers and the day has been celebrated with the prime significance of thanking the cattle for helping them in paddy fields. They adorn the animals with garlands of flowers and dash their necks with beads or bells, their environment looks like one big party. Families also assemble special consumer offerings and perform rituals to worship the animals. Participating in traditional games, and folk dances, they undoubtedly create a delightful and joyful atmosphere.

The Importance of Mattu Pongal Kolam

The Kolams are one of the main components of the Pongal fetes. These intricate illustrations, made of rice flour, are placed near the entrances of people’s homes as to invite happiness and positive energy. They prefer to use rice flour as they think that it can only be used as food for small creatures and in this, they are reflecting the spirit of sharing with nature.

The Art of Making a Mattu Pongal Kolam

Here is the simplest way to bring out your Mattu pongal kolam: Take a sheet of white paper or a white floor. After adding the water, leave it to stand for 10 minutes to soften and smoothen the floor. If you wish to create a Kolam, you take a piece of paper (sheets) and place it on the pave stone where you will draw the kolam and sprinkle some water to make the space smooth. This will ensure that you get a nice, neat, and smooth outline. Choose from the designs available – it might be an authentic design or your ideal creation.

• Draw the outline of the kolam with rice flour.

• Paint the kolams in bright colors mixing deep colors for skin flowers and bright colors for the central area of the kolam.
• Try something different for your kids by arranging and letting them create games with their imaginations.
• Decorate the corners with flowers if you like.

Joining the Community in Festivity
