It seems like Mason Mount’s future lies away from Chelsea. Speculation was rife about his future for the last few weeks, with Liverpool and Arsenal linked. However, recent reports suggest that he has agreed personal terms with Manchester United for a transfer this summer because Old Trafford is his preferred destination.

With only one year remaining on his current deal, Chelsea are looking to sell the midfielder instead of trying to incorporate him into their system by meeting his wage demands. The main reason behind the lack of an agreement is a disparity in terms of image rights and Mount not receiving comparable wages to his fellow Cobham academy graduate, Reece James, who recently signed a deal valued at £250,000 per week.

A transfer fee in the region of £80 million has been rumoured, which United are not willing to pay. Talks are still on between the two clubs to reach an agreement on the valuation of the player.

The 2022/23 season was a frustrating one for the Cobham academy graduate, with injuries and poor form limiting his contributions. Mount was unable to play the final portion of the season due to a pelvic injury which ultimately required surgery to correct.

Mason Mount agrees personal terms with Manchester United

The 24-year-old is a two-time Chelsea plyer of the year, and is one of their standout academy graduates. However, opinion on him has always been split. He has been the favoured option for managers throughout his time at the club due to his work rate and his ability to be versatile across the pitch.

But it seems like his time with the West London side is now at an end. There is a gulf of about £15-20 million in terms of the valuation between the two clubs. However, an agreement is expected soon following which Mason Mount will sign for Manchester United.

Manchester United transfer news: How will Mason Mount fit into United’s line-up?

Erik Ten Hag has been quite consistent with his style of play. The Dutchman employs a high pressing system, which Mount will be perfect for due to his energetic profile. He will be able to lead the press in a manner well suited to the current system.

While Bruno Fernandes is the set choice in the number 10 position, Mason Mount could replace Christian Eriksen in the line-up and play alongside Casemiro. With the intense fixture schedule coming up ahead, the Dane will need to be rotated and Mount will be an excellent choice, having a profile similar to him.

What is the future of Chelsea’s midfield then?

Alongside Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus Cheek, Mateo Kovacic, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic are likely to leave Chelsea this summer. They have been closely linked with a move for Manuel Ugarte of Sporting to pair alongside Enzo Fernandez.

And it seems like the deal for the Uruguayan will go through with the money from all these sales financing the move. Christopher Nkunku is set to arrive in the coming weeks, and could play in the number ten role or as a second striker, while Kai Havertz could also operate behind the striker if Mauricio Pochettino so chooses.

Fans will be split once again on the Cobham academy graduate leaving, but with his deal running out and a lack of Champions League football, it seems like the best option right now is to let him go for a fee than for nothing next summer.
