Marvel Just Dropped The Ultimate Fantastic Four Prequel Before Avengers: Doomsday — Here’s Why It Matters

Marvel fans, buckle up! Before Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom collides with the Fantastic Four in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel Studios has quietly filled in a crucial gap in the story — and it’s got fans buzzing.

The comic in question? Fantastic Four: First Foes – Shalla-Bal #1, a prequel that dives into the backstory of Shalla-Bal, the MCU’s female Silver Surfer, played by Julia Garner in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

What Happens In The Prequel Comic?

Written by Charles Soule and illustrated by Mark Buckingham, the comic reveals how a grieving scientist from Zenn-La became Galactus’s herald — sacrificing her freedom to save her world, only to be forced into destroying countless others as the Silver Surfer.

The story shows Shalla-Bal trying to bring peace to a war-torn planet before revealing its grim fate — mirroring her arc in the film, where Johnny Storm ultimately convinces her to turn against Galactus during the final battle.

Why This Sets Up Avengers: Doomsday

This isn’t the first tie-in comic. Marvel already released Fantastic Four: First Foes, exploring the team’s origin battle against the Mad Thinker, and two more one-shots are expected before 2026 ends. Many fans suspect the final entry could finally explore Victor von Doom’s history with Reed Richards — critical context before Downey Jr.’s villain turn.

The Avengers: Doomsday trailer already hints that Sue Storm remembers Victor as brilliant but broken by tragedy — suggesting the team may not yet know he’s become Doctor Doom. That gap is exactly what these comics are built to close.

Marvel clearly wants fans walking into theaters with full context on both its heroes and its next big villain — a smart move ahead of one of the MCU’s biggest crossover events yet.
