What Happened in Episode 4 — “Open Source”?
Before looking ahead, a quick recap of where things stand. Episode 4 ended with Alex and Lily uncovering confidential files that suggest large numbers of workers could be replaced and sent back to Earth. As a result of this discovery, jobs, trust, and political stability are moving to the forefront of the narrative.
Alex initially did not draw attention to himself after arriving at Helios — but by the end of the episode, he decides to share the discovery of the automation process, turning an individual corporate problem into a general one. It’s the kind of decision that changes everything for everyone around him.
What to Expect in Episode 5 — “Svoboda”
The official synopsis is blunt and thrilling: “Chaos erupts on Mars following a shocking revelation.” Based on what Episode 4 set up, the fallout from the leaked automation files is about to hit Happy Valley like a shockwave.
Workers at Happy Valley may organize against Helios leadership — the automation plan threatens jobs and residency status, which could trigger protests, strikes, or resistance against management decisions on Mars. Alex may also face consequences for exposing internal files, putting his future at the company and his relationships inside the colony under pressure.
Dev and other leaders may be forced to respond publicly, as the crisis could push management to clarify long-term plans for Mars — especially regarding labor, housing, and the colony’s independence from Earth.
“Svoboda” is a Czech/Slovak word meaning “freedom” — and the title alone tells you exactly what this episode is really about.

Why Season 5 Is the Most Compelling Yet
Season 5 explores a Mars colony that is thriving but increasingly at odds with Earth — with nationalism front and centre as people back on Earth question whether they need to keep supporting those on Mars. TheWrap It’s alternate history storytelling at its most relevant and thought-provoking — space opera that feels uncomfortably close to real political conversations happening right now.
